Well true believers….we asked….we waited…..and now it’s official: Spider-Man is coming to the MCU!
In a late announcement last night, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios declared that our favorite Webhead will not only get a new solo film in 2017 under the production guidance of Kevin Feige and his team – more importantly – we’ll see Spidey swing into a Marvel film before that! The news is certainly worth celebrating by fans of the character and the possibilities of the multiple directions this can go. Which MCU film he’ll appear in first wasn’t specified, of course, but many folks and outlets like Collider did mention a plausible speculation:
While the press release didn’t name the Marvel movie that will feature Spider-Man, I assume it will be Captain America: Civil War…..Spider-Man is a huge part of the Civil War comics, and now Marvel has him before Civil War starts filming…..if Spider-Man didn’t show up in Civil War, the only other Marvel movies are Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Neither one is a great fit for the wall-crawler.
I agree with that. Though you can see speaking and dealing more with Strange than the Guardians in the comics, those films wouldn’t make sense. He’d be better suited next the other, more familiar faces fans know.
Sadly, for me anyway, no mention of actor Andrew Garfield was made regarding the new deal. Garfield played the iconic superhero in both of the more recent The Amazing Spider-Man films. His take on Peter Parker left some people disliking his “artsy, moody; version but I for one LOVED it. I think Garfield is great actor and his look and portrayal of Parker and Spidey were just fine, way better than that “other” guy’s. As I said no official word was said on this aspect of the role but it doesn’t good for Garfield.
Some other key points of the deal were that Sony will “continue
to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films” and that both Marvel and Sony are “also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films”. Looks like Marvel and Sony’s to-do list just got a little bit bigger and I couldn’t happier! The Wall-Crawler has always been my favorite superhero and now that this opens up new doors for him, I can’t wait to see him on the big screen again!
