With the all the new trailers out for Days of Future Past, the rumors swirling around Apocalypse, another Wolverine movie, AND hints of an X-Force film……there’s great deal of “X-citement” going on the X-Men film world. And very recently, we heard about one more thing to add to that list. Channing Tatum has expressed his interest to play the card throwing mutant Gambit to Lauren Schuler Donner, who is the producer for the X-Men films. And that interest was expressed right back to him.
The producer has said that she’d love for Tatum to play Gambit. Even though the ‘master thief’ won’t be in the upcoming Day of Future Past film, director Bryan Singer told Entertainment Weekly that he “is exploring the idea of reintroducing Gambit into 2016′sApocalypse.” Interesting right? And Tatum recently spoke with MTV about playing the Louisiana X-Man:
“….Gambit’s [the] really only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I [mean] I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know I guess just being from down south—my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida—I don’t know I just related to him……He’s kind of like the anti-hero; he’s a thief. He’s not even like a hero, he’s kind of walking the line of grey. He loves women and drinking and smoking, he’s just a cool guy that happens to have a good moral center…….“I hope it does [come together]. You never know, it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would play it. I’m already working on the accent.”
There’s still a lot up in the air right now. DOFP hasn’t even come out yet but there’s no doubt it will be a success at the box office. We can’t imagine with all the hype and marketing (and not to mention the football team-like roster) it has behind it that it’ll disappoint. So with no signs of slowing down and the huge fan base that Gambit has, why not give him AND Channing Tatum their shot? I think he’d be great to at least test him for the role if the chance comes up. Physically he could do it, no doubt there. Though we all know he doesn’t necessarily have the accent. But that’s workable. It might even erase the version we got in Origins. Don’t act like you don’t know what I mean either.
According to Variety, Donner says of Tatum’s confirmation of playing Gambit:
He’s a rogue, Channing — he’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that…..And he’s got a really good heart … I think he’ll be great for Gambit……And he’s a southerner too … he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”
Screencrush also adds some fuel to the “C-Tates” / Gambit fire:
While many have speculated that Tatum would join the cast of the upcoming ‘Days of Future Past’ sequel, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ he is not yet attached to star in that film (though, there may be some kind of post-credits appearance). Tatum would instead star as Gambit in his own standalone ‘X-Men’ spinoff. Fox has announced their Marvel slate through 2018, with only one date not attached to a specific movie – July 13, 2018 – which, is likely reserved for Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ film.
