‘The Dark Tower’, ‘Guardians of The Galaxy 2, and Matthew McConaughey

Alright, alright, alright. If you’ve wondered why cool, laid back actor Matthew McConaughey chose The Dark Tower over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 then you’re not alone. Many fans of the actor were looking forward to seeing him introduced to the MCU a while back when his name came up as big candidate. Instead, the GotG Vol. 2 part went to Kurt Russell and that’s certainly not a bad choice either.

We’ll admit though that our wish to see McConaughey have some sort of role in the Marvel Universe was certainly strong. He even expressed his own interest on several occasions when speaking to certain media outlets. There’s a time when he spoke to Variety and revealed that he had talks with both Marvel and DC and even read some scripts. Unfortunately nothing felt right at those times but he remained open to the idea.

Now the actor has explained his reasoning for choosing his Man in Black role in The Dark Tower. Collider reports that during an interview with Playboy he had this to say regarding his choice:

I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was ‘It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.’ I’d feel like an amendment. The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director [Nikolaj Arcel] and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black—a.k.a. the Devil—in my version of this Stephen King novel. We’ve done the first one. It’s a fantastic thriller that takes place in another realm, an alternate universe, but it’s very much grounded. For instance, the gunslinger’s weapon isn’t a lightsaber or something; it’s a pistol. I enjoyed approaching my character as if I were the Devil having a good time, getting turned on by exposing human hypocrisies wherever he finds them.

So it seems that he wanted to chose a role where he saw growth – in an organic way – for a character from perhaps the ground up. Nothing wrong with that right? We don’t think so. There’s also no point in completely ruling him out down the line for a Marvel or DC role. You can be sure that he’ll make the right choice when and if that time comes along for us to see him on the big screen some sort of superpower…..maybe. Especially if it’s, like the actor likes to say, “pretty cool”.
