Mondo has teamed up with Black Dragon Press to bring fans a special Halloween print! The Legend of Sleepy Hollow comes to life thanks to the talented Peter Diamond. The print, which will be available in two versions, has brilliant color and texture that captures this explosive scene. The US variant will drop at a random time today from Mondo while the UK version will be made available via Black Dragon Press at 5PM (UK time). Both prints come in at 18″x24″ at prices you don’t have to lose your head over. (sorry…I had to)
THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW x PETER DIAMOND
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been a favorite story of mine since the first time I heard it as a kid. The brilliant characters, the atmosphere, the historical setting, it all fires up my imagination. But more than anything else it seems to turn on that trick of painting this picture so fully-realised and so stirring that we abandon disbelief almost entirely, then just at the end mocking us for ever believing it.Well, I don’t think I’m alone in refusing to believe that Ichabod made it off that bridge still in this world, or that the Horseman was really Brom Bones, head and all. For me, the real story ends on the pumpkin’s final impact, so that’s the moment I chose for this image.The horse, Gunpowder, doesn’t get much limelight next to Ichabod and the Horseman, but he’s a great character on his own. He ends up being very important to my image, and thanks to Washington Irving’s deft touch of the horse’s one pupil-less eye I got a properly spooky animal to work with. Every thing about making this image was fun, but nothing more so than drawing Gunpowder.It was a little difficult to turn down a chance to draw the Headless Horseman himself, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that he sneaks into it in spite of me: this rider could almost be the Hessian at the moment of his decapitation. It’s a double entendre I didn’t intend, but in fact it’s already built into the story and so it just kind of cropped up on its own in the design process. I think it is one of those little ambiguities that makes an image more interesting. – Peter Diamond
