“Every punch I’ve ever thrown’s been on my own…nobody showed me how to do this.”
Director Ryan Coogler’s newest film in the Rocky (kinda) franchise – Creed – has just released this first trailer. After watching this several times, I’m all for it. I admit when we heard about this a long time ago, I was very much on the fence. I didn’t think the franchise needed another one. Coogler’s nods to the previous movies and his weaving of those elements could be what makes Creed a champ at the box office.
The film stars Michael B. Jordan as the title character Adonis Creed. Adonis is the son of Rocky’s dearly departed friend and former rival Apollo Creed. And yes, a seasoned and wise Sylvester Stallone is back as well. The short version of the plot is Adonis is fighter, maybe with a chip on his shoulder and parental issues, and seeks out Balboa as a mentor. The tone from the trailer appears to be one of sentiment, with the young Creed seemingly needing to face some personal demons. I’ve read on several blogs that it’s certainly nice and refreshing that Stallone has stepped back from center stage and given the spotlight to Jordan. How much Rocky will be in it is still remains to be seen.
