Nerd Fu was essentially created while sitting in line, waiting to get into Hall H. We were just two guys from Texas, at our first major con. We were BLOWN away by everything we saw at our first SDCC (2012) and vowed, right then and there, to start a podcast or website that would allow us to live that awesome Nerd life every day.
Here we are, four years later and Nerd Fu is a reality. We created this thing that allows us to podcast, write, Periscope, etc. and we love what we do. A HUGE part of that every year is San Diego Comic-Con and we are about to attend for our 5th consecutive year. We know how lucky we are and we don’t take it lightly.
OUR FAVORITE SDCC MEMORIES
Our first 4 San Diego Comic-Cons have been amazing, with each year even more fun and event-filled than before. We are often asked about our favorite moments from those conventions, so we decided to make it official. Here are our favorite SDCC moments, in no particular order.
Sully & Steve Meet Zachary Levi
Waiting in line for a party in 2015, we noticed Zachary Levi (Chuck, Thor: The Dark World, Heroes Reborn) exiting out another door. We yelled and he was nice enough to come over to us and pose for a photo. They best part, he handed my phone to the girl he was with to take the pic. That photographer turned out to be the lovely Yvonne Strahovsky (Chuck, Dexter). Had I not been so shocked, I might have gotten a photo with her too!
Nathan Fillion Auctions Off a Nerd Fu T-Shirt
Every year, Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) is a guest at Nerd HQ and has a panel where he auctions off items given to him by fans. The money goes to charity and the fans get some awesome items autographed by the man himself. In 2015, we found out that Fillion included the Nerd Fu T-Shirt we gave him at Dallas Comic Con the year before. You can watch the full video here: Nerd HQ 2015: A Conversation with Nathan Fillion (Day 4)
Steve Meets Allison Haislip…. Again
At SDCC 2013, Steve siad “I’m gonna go to Nerd HQ and see if I can find Allison Haislip (Attack of the Show, Con Man)” Ten minutes later he texted and said he walked in and saw her immediately. He even gave her a Nerd Fu T-Shirt. What are the odds? In 2015, we attended a LEGO party and Steve said “I wonder if Allison Haislip will be here.” He turned around and there she was. Sully played photographer to this special moment. Will he see her again in 2016?
Loki Surprises Everyone in Hall H
Hall H – 2013. Right in the middle of a reveal from Marvel’s Kevin Feige, the lights went out and a familiar voice took over the arena they call Hall H. “I am Loki of Asgard and I am burdened with glorious purpose.” Tom Hiddleston came out in full Loki cosplay to address the audience in what will go down as one of the most amazing moments EVER to take place at San Diego Comic-Con. We were there in Hall H and there are NO words to describe how amazing it was.

We Bump Into Seth Green at a Party
SDCC 2014 – Thanks to an online contest, we got to attend the HitFix party (an RSVP only event). As it turns out, there were a few celebrities at this party, including Zachary Levi, Simon Kinberg (Producer & Writer of the X-Men films & Sherlock Holmes) and Seth Green. Yes, the one-and-only Seth Green. Steve tracked him down and I got to play photographer… again. Next time Steve gets to stand behind the camera.
Sully Breaks Bad
Thanks to another online contest in 2014, Sully was invited to an exclusive autograph event at the Hard Rock Hotel. The cast of Breaking Bad, including Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, RJ Mitte & Bob Odenkirk signed autographs, handed out blue candy (that looked like something Walter White cooked up), and posed for some selfies. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Misha Collins Brings Us Coffee
One of the ongoing traditions at SDCC is the Sunday morning run of Misha Collins (Supernatural). Every year that we have gone, we’ve seen him out running on the morning of the Supernatural panel. He always makes a point to run right past the line of fans waiting for that very panel. In 2014, he took things a step further and brought dozens, if not hundreds, of coffees out to fans waiting in line. Steve managed to get an autograph on his phone case.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens in Hall H
Our first year to go as press and it coincides with one of the most legendary panels of all time. The cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Gwendoline Christie & J.J. Abrams exit the stage right in front of us. At the end of the video, you see J.J. sign something for a fan. That fan was none other than… the guy standing right in front of Sully. HA!
Django Unchained Surprise Appearance …. in a Parking Lot
Our very first SDCC in 2012, before there was even a Nerd Fu, Steve and I didn’t have tickets for Saturday, so we walked around the Gaslamp District and found ourselves hanging out at the parking lot just beside Petco Park. There was a weird barn backdrop set up and a line was forming, so we decided to hang around and see what was happening. A few hours later, some of the biggest names from Django Unchained appeared to sign autographs. Director Quentin Tarantino, Jaime Foxx, Kerry Washington, Christoph Waltz and Walton Goggins were all there.
We were literally two people away from getting in the autograph line before it was capped. But that didn’t stop us from taking some awesome photos. Steve eventually ended up with a partially signed poster, thanks to some new friends.
But wait, there’s more. That’s right – we will be adding to this list as we approach SDCC 2016 and after, hopefully. Who knows what Comic-Con has in store for us this year?
