If you’re like us – and c’mon you know you are – then you enjoy pulling out a board game and calling over the crew for a game-drink-shout-a-thon. Our usual go-to’s are ones like Exploding Kittens, various types of Monopoly/Clue, and of course Cranium. Recently though, a very interesting game came across our radar called Mixtape Massacre and we’re dying to play it! (Sorry, I had to)
The Kickstarter
Bright Light Media developed the game and launched a Kickstarter for it back on April 8th through May 8, 2015 with a pledged goal of $20,000. The project achieved and went beyond that goal, finishing with 410 backers who pledged $26,851! Pledge goals started out at $5 and went to $777 with several of the rewards having been claimed to 100%. So what exactly is Mixtape Massacre?
Glad you asked:
A tabletop board game where up to 6 players choose from 1 of 8 horror archetypes and compete in a fictional 1986 killing spree to be remembered. Make your way through the small town of Tall Oaks, dispatching victims, collecting kills, and engaging in iconic brawls with other players, proving once and for all, who is the baddest of the brood!
With tons of references and jokes to all of your favorite 1980’s music, films, and pop-culture icons – Mixtape Massacre will have you laughing while you’re slashing!
The Game
As you can see from the layout of the board, locations and characters – Bright Light Media is not “playing” around when it comes to giving the nod to the 80’s. The character likenesses to popular horror icons are my personal favorite aspect of the game! The artwork is fun and the spin they managed to put on everything is amazing. Playing the game should average around 40 minutes or more – which can be anywhere from 2 to 6. The creators do recommend a player age of 17 years or older due to content. Finally, being 80’s kids themselves, Bright Light Media has developed the game’s own Spotify playlist to help set the mood with “enough 80’s tunes and serial killer themes in this mix to keep the fun going for hours on end”.
Here’s what to expect in the box of:
