Ottawa (Ontario), January 15, 2014 – In May 2014, once again, heroes from all corners of the fantasy fiction world will converge at the EY Centre for the highly anticipated third edition of Ottawa Comiccon. With bigger stars, more panels and more activities, Comiccon is expected to surpass last year’s attendance, when over 30,000 fans came to meet their real-life heroes and to partake in the pleasure of shopping for collectible treasures.
Christopher Lloyd, best known as the beloved Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, opposite Michael J. Fox, is one of the top featured guests for the 2014 edition. He has had an impressive acting career, from stage productions, to film, television and animation. He made his big-screen debut in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), which won five Academy Awards, including for best picture. Since then, audiences have seen him on TV shows like Taxi and Road to Avonlea, and a multitude of high profile films including Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Clue (1985),Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) and The Addams Family (1991). Fans will have an opportunity to meet him, ask him questions at his Q&A, get his autograph, and even participate in photo ops with an actual replica of the DeLorean time machine.
The horror icon Robert Englund, best known to audience as Freddy Krueger in eight films from theNightmare on Elm Street franchise, will be one of the major headline guests for 2014’s special focus on horror. Freddy Krueger has been rated as one of the most important movie villains by the American Film Institute, and Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
Previously announced guests include the King of Cult, Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, Burn Notice), the Canadian actress and Grand Empress of Sci-Fi, Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1), Breaking Bad’s breakout villain Giancarlo Esposito, and hockey-mask-wearing Jason Voorhees himself, Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th: Part VII: The New Blood).
Comic book fans will be delighted with the starting roster of guest artists, spearheaded by the co-creator of The Walking Dead, Tony Moore, who served as the interior artist when the title launched over 10 years ago, but stayed on as the cover artist for over two years. In addition, British comics artist Simon Bisley, who has a wild style, reliant on paints, acrylics, inks, and is often remembered for his explosive work on Lobo and Heavy Metal Magazine. Returning to Ottawa is Atlantic-born Nick Bradshaw, praised for his bigger-than-life pages in Wolverine and the X-Men and Danger Girl. Opportunities to obtain sketches and autographs will abound.
Collectors of comic books, toys, cards, movies, and other fantastical and geeky memorabilia will find themselves in paradise, surrounded by passionate retailers, who might just hold in their crates the precious missing pieces of a beloved collection.
