It was announced last January that LucasFilms and Marvel would be collaborating to release exclusive Star Wars comics and graphic novels starting in 2015.
These comics take place directly after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The three comics are set to connect with the cinematic universe, which includes the upcoming films, Episode VII, VIII, and IX.
One of my favorite new artists, Skottie Young, best known for his work with various other marvel characters, has released his variant covers of three issues.
The three books to be introduced in the upcoming year, from left to right are:
- Princess Leia #1, kicking off a five-issue miniseries in March, 2015 by writer Mark Waid & artist Terry Dodson
- Star Wars #1, launching in January, 2015 from writer Jason Aaron & artist John Cassaday
- Darth Vader #1, following close behind in February, 2015 by Kieron Gillen w/art by Salvador Larroca.
In an interview with MTV, Skottie Young stated,
Like most people my age, I spent a good part of my childhood playing with ‘Star Wars’ toys for hours on end. I cried like a baby when I realized I left my wampa figure on the radiator and his leg melted half off.
Flash forward years later and I get to be a little (pun absolutely intended) part of the ‘Star Wars’ universe by creating my take on these covers. It’s surreal. Also, I’ve shared that wampa story before and fans actually bring me wampa figures to cons. THIS IS MY LIFE!
Personally, I hope Boba Fett gets his own miniseries as well, I would also love to see Skottie Young’s depiction of the little bounty hunter. I think I’ll need this artwork hanging in my son’s nursery.
