Earlier this week, Spike released the fear and panic-filled first trailer for their new original series The Mist. The series is a based off of Stephen King‘s horror novella of the same name. But while this new series may share the name of King’s story, just how much familiar material can King and horror fans expect?
The otherworldly Mist is there for sure but after watching the trailer, there’s a big element that’s missing that had a lot to do with the source material – the creatures. We can assume that Spike and the show’s creator, Christian Torpe, may be saving some of the goods for another trailer or just the show’s start altogether. The novella and the 2007 Frank Darabont film version pretty much kept a similar tone, having both psychological and supernatural elements while this trailer seems to focus on more of the psychological aspect. Another missing element from this preview are familiar characters, however there is a brief scene where a nod to “Arrowhead” is given – we’ll just leave it at that.
It seems like Torpe knowingly took a slight departure from King but for good reasons. In an article by Entertainment Weekly, he explained his vision a little more:
“I wanted to be respectful to the source material, but my feeling was there was already a great adaptation out there by Frank Darabont…..“I wanted to be respectful to the source material, but my feeling was there was already a great adaptation out there by Frank Darabont. The novella is 200 pages and one location, and we needed to change that to make an ongoing series. But we wanted to remain faithful to the heart of the story.
Gone is the grocery store, where residents of a small town take shelter from the beasts outside and unleash the sinister qualities within themselves. The series will be spread out over several lockdown locations, including a church and a mall where hundreds have holed up against the monsters. But we are not just in the mall. We establish different little pressure cookers under the influence of whoever the leader would be in those locations. Each of them come up with different theories or beliefs about what’s going on. Eventually, the story lines will dovetail and turn into conflicts
Consider us intrigued and there for the series debut on June 22nd – we wouldn’t Mist this.
