The Cornetto Trilogy

Year’s ago, after it had already made it to rental stores/kiosks, I rented Shaun of the Dead and I am SO glad that I did. What a fantastic movie.

Then, I saw Simon Pegg and “that other guy” were in another movie – Hot Fuzz. I once again (foolishly) waited until the movie was available to rent. It took me a few minutes to warm up to that one, but then the “buddy cop montage” scene came up and I just lost it.  Another winner!

So, when I saw the first trailer for The World’s End, there was no debate. This is definitely one I would see at the theater. I mean, Paul wasn’t as good as the previous two, but I’d give the guys another chance.

WAIT – hold the phone. I did a little digging and it turns out that Paul was not directed by Edgar Wright (the genius behind Shaun and Hot Fuzz). Then I dug a little more and I found something that I didn’t know existed….

Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy

The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (also known as the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy or the Cornetto trilogy) is a series of comedy films directed by Edgar Wright, written by Wright and Simon Pegg, produced by Nira Park, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost. The films are Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End.

Ok, it’s cool that it is a trilogy, but why call it “Cornetto?” In short, each film is connected to a Cornetto ice cream flavour (Cornetto is a real ice cream company).  In both of the films released so far (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) there is a scene in which one of the main characters purchases a Cornetto of the appropriate flavour. In Shaun of the Dead it was Red Strawberry and in Hot Fuzz it was Blue Original Cornetto.

As a movie fanatic for more than 20 years, I am completely surprised that I had never heard of the Cornetto Trilogy before.  I love learning new things like this. But wait, there’s more.

Fan Art

With the upcoming release of The World’s End and SDCC (Comic Con) on the horizon, Edgar Wright and team decided to have some fun with the release of the final film. In addition to a recently announced Virtual Scavenger Hunt, there is also a tumblr site dedicated to the trilogy where fan art is being hosted.  Here are some of the submissions that caught my eye.

Every one of these designs is worthy of my desktop and there are more on the Cornetto Trilogy tumblr. Jump on over to the site and check it out. You’ll be happy you did.
