House Nerd went a little crazy over the hinted comment that George R.R. Martin’s editor had regarding the possibility of the author writing an eighth (not the intended seven) book for the saga Song of Ice and Fire, Entertainment Weekly went to Martin himself and asked for a little more insight on this possible new turn of events:
“My plan is to finish in seven,” Martin says. “But my original plan was to finish in three. I write the stories and they grow. I deal with certain things and sometimes I find myself not at the end of a story. My plan right now is still seven. But first I have to finish Book Six. Get back to me when I’m half-way through Book Seven and then maybe I’ll tell you something more meaningful.”
EW went on to also note that back in 2011, when asked about being “firmly” committed to seven books, Martin said “I’m as firm as I am…….until I decide not to be firm”.
Now, neither Sully or myself have read the books but after reading a few more write-ups on the direction HBO has been going with the show versus the books, it looks like the show is on track to wrap up story lines. Again I stress that we haven’t read the books so I can only go on what others have said about them. Obviously HBO would probably need to stretch some things out if it looks like Martin may add more to the plot but you never know what might happen. The ‘Thrones’ author has also said that he misses some scenes that he wrote but that the premium cable channel has left out. So what about using feature films to help with gaps? HBO went on record to say “they weren’t fans of the idea”. But would we want feature films of this TV show? I can’t imagine the stuff they’d let fly on the big screen right? Well……okay maybe feature films would be work after all.
