Earlier this year, it was revealed that Voltron would be headed back to the small screen, via streaming service Netflix. Little information was provided at the time, a logo and title Voltron: Legendary Defender, but we knew that was just the beginning of something very special.
Thanks to USA Today, we have more information on the new series, produced by DreamWorks Animation. Apparently, fans at WonderCon in Los Angeles will be getting a first-look at footage today (Friday, March 25th), but a teaser image and some story details were released ahead of the panel.
Legendary Defender centers on five Earth teenagers — Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro — who are thrown into the middle of an intergalactic battle and become the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon.
We’re trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show
– Co-Executive Producer Lauren Montgomery
No official release date has been revealed by Netflix or DreamWorks Animation, but it looks like we’ll be getting 13 22-minute episodes sometime later this year. Maybe part of the reveal today at WonderCon will include that much anticipated date.
